Feedback from U.S.S. Mariner

David Cameron over at U.S.S. Mariner was kind enough to write back with his thoughts (and to link this site - thanks!). He had more information on Ichiro's contract, and reminded me I had forgotten to include cash the M's included in deals in my previous post. Here's the updated 2004 snapshot of the Mariners payroll:

This would bring the pre-Sasaki payroll to $93.7m, which is more inline with what the great folks at U.S.S. Mariner had calculated, and which puts me back in the normal position of doubting the veracity of statements made by club management with regards to payroll.

I've also updated the Padres page with this new information. As well as some daily updates for the Tigers, Orioles, Yankees, and Marlins.

Thanks again to David!

Seattle Payroll Analysis

The guys over at U.S.S. Mariner check in today with an analysis of the Mariners payroll and where it's headed now that Kaz has left town. They quote Seattle as saying "they were $1 million over their projected $95 million payroll budget before Sasaki made his decision". Let's take a look:

The numbers in red are where I've made assumptions for the purposes of this post (i.e, you won't see those figures on the Mariners payroll page). I've figured the minor league minimum ($50k) for those on minor-league deals, and a modest raise to $400k for the pre-arbitration players. I don't have the exact breakdowns for either Spiezio or Ichiro's contracts (listed in orange), but if we take this rough total of $88.33m, and add in the $8m guaranteed Sasaki for 2004, we get $96.33 - or about "$1 million over their projected $95 million payroll budget". Looks like Mariners' management is being up front about this (at least).

Weird Formatting

I've been notified that when viewing the payrolls with certain browers (reportedly Opera and Mozilla, at least), the formatting is quite awkward. I'll be looking into fixing it, but in the meantime, you can see the site properly using Internet Explorer. Thanks for your patience!

FAQ Section

I've put up a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section, regarding both this blog and payroll / luxury tax calculations in general. I'll be updating it periodically, especially if I start to get more questions via email. Check it out!

Sayonara

With the departure of Kaz Sasaki becoming official, the Mariners shave $8.5m off of their projected luxury tax payroll for this upcoming season. Sasaki had $500k in incentives for this season, which could bring the luxury tax payroll savings to $9.0m. Seattle will save $8.0m - $8.5m (depending on how you want to count the incentive bonus) in actual payroll this year, and another $1m in 2005 (would have been a buyout).

This gives the Mariners plenty of breathing room with the tax, as their projected payroll for tax purposes is down to $92.5m (tax starts at $120.5m this year), dropping them to 5th in the league (the Mets are now higher at $97.5m).

Also put up some updates for the Astros and Dodgers.

Aaron F***ing Boone

While investigating options for replacing Aaron Boone, I realized I had forgotten to transfer Craig Counsell's contract over from the Diamondbacks to the Brewers. I've also put up some minor updates to the Mets, Red Sox, Rockies, and Royals payrolls.

Speaking of Boone, should the Yankees decide to void his contract (since he hurt himself playing basketball), they'd still be responsible for 30 days' termination pay, which would be about $942k.

And lastly, I'm waiting to hear the official news on Kaz Sasaki's departure before updating the Mariners payroll.

Dodger Thoughts

Thanks to the Transaction Guy, I've updated the Dodger's payroll with the Odalis Perez signing. Speaking of the Dodgers, they've clearly been shaping their payroll with an eye towards the sale of the team - they've only got $1.1m committed to their 2006 payroll. The only teams with less money on the books for 2006 are the Expos, Brewers, Tigers, Indians, and Devil Rays. You can see this and more on the updated summary page.

Takatsu

Updated Chicago's payroll with the details of Takatsu's signing.

Also put up updates to the Reds, Mets, and Royals payrolls.
